Among the iPhones that are expected to launch this year, Apple is said to bring in a budget model that will cost about half the price of 2017’s iPhone X. As enticing as that might sound, this version is said to sport an LCD display, whereas its more upmarket counterparts will feature OLED screens.
Now, a new report from Rosenblatt Securities analyst Jun Zhang suggests that the LCD model will come in a variety of bright colors to differentiate itself from the 2018 upgrades of iPhone X.
First picked up by financial news analysis services provider StreetInsider, the note details that the supposed “iPhone 8s” will be available in blue, yellow, and pink.
“Since Apple [has] started to launch three new models every year, we believe the company needs to differentiate the designs of the LCD model from the two high end OLED models. One reasonable choice would be to add different colors.”
While this prediction seems more like an inference than insider supply chain data, it isn’t completely baseless. Apple adopted a similar strategy for the vibrant iPhone 5c, though it wasn’t as successful as planned.
With how much pricier the iPhone has become, introducing a budget-tier smartphone in a variety of colors to offset higher-end offerings could prove to be more fruitful this time.
